REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SEMARANG – A total of 8,872 inmates and juvenile offenders in Central Java province received special Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah remission. Among them, 245 are inmates convicted of corruption cases.

The head of the Central Java Directorate General of Corrections Regional Office, Mardi Santoso, stated that the remission was granted to inmates who met administrative and substantive requirements. For example, they must have served at least six months of their sentence, have no disciplinary violations, and possess a final court decision.

“This remission is a right for inmates who have met the requirements. It also serves as motivation for them to continue behaving well and actively participating in rehabilitation programmes,” Mardi said in a statement obtained by Republika on Sunday (22/3/2026).

The inmates receiving remission are spread across all Correctional Institutions (Lapas), State Detention Houses (Rutan), and Special Juvenile Rehabilitation Institutions (LPKA) in Central Java. Of the total 8,872 recipients, 8,811 are inmates, while the remaining 61 are juvenile offenders.

A total of 8,754 inmates received Special Remission I (RK-I), which is a partial reduction in sentence length. Meanwhile, 57 individuals received Special Remission II (RK-II), granting them immediate release upon remission.

All 61 juvenile offenders receiving remission only obtained RK-I. Thus, none of them were granted immediate release.

Based on the data, Semarang Class I Prison has the highest number of remission recipients, with 873 people. They consist of 867 recipients of RK-I and 6 of RK-II.

By type of criminal offence, recipients are dominated by general criminal cases, with 5,429 people, followed by narcotics cases with 3,157 people, and corruption offences with 245 people. Additionally, there are inmates convicted of terrorism, illegal logging, and money laundering who also received remission.

Currently, the number of occupants in prisons and detention centres in Central Java reaches 16,298 people. This figure exceeds the maximum capacity of 10,393 people. The granting of remission is said to contribute to reducing the overcrowding levels in prisons and detention centres.
