79 high-risk prisoners transferred from South Sulawesi to Nusakambangan

The Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections (Ditjenpas) in South Sulawesi has transferred 79 high-risk prisoners from several correctional technical implementation units (UPT) in the province to maximum and super-maximum security prisons on Nusakambangan Island, Central Java. The transfer of high-risk prisoners to Nusakambangan is part of a strategy to strengthen the correctional security system, said Mulyadi, Head of the South Sulawesi Ditjenpas Regional Office, in Makassar on Monday. He stated that the move is a strategic step to reinforce security and order within the correctional environment while ensuring that rehabilitation processes are carried out according to each prisoner’s risk level. In addition to minimising potential security and order disturbances at their original units, this step aims to place prisoners according to their risk levels so that the rehabilitation process can proceed more effectively, measurably, and optimally, he stressed. Strong synergy is key to supporting a safe and orderly correctional system, in line with the acceleration programme of the Minister of Immigration and Corrections to create a more professional correctional service that benefits society. This is an implementation of the South Sulawesi Ditjenpas Regional Office’s ‘no tolerance’ programme against any form of crime originating from within prisons or detention centres, he reiterated. The 79 transferred prisoners originated from Makassar Class I Prison, Maros Class IIB Prison, Sungguminasa Class IIA Narcotics Prison, Palopo Class IIA Prison, Makassar Class I Detention Centre, and Masamba Class IIB Detention Centre. Prior to departure, all prisoners underwent administrative checks, health examinations, and searches in accordance with applicable standard operating procedures. The group departed from Maros Class IIB Prison on Friday (17/7) at 21:00 WITA heading to Makassar’s former Soekarno Hatta Port, continuing the journey by sea to Tanjung Perak Port in Surabaya, East Java. Upon arrival in Surabaya on Sunday (19/7), all prisoners underwent a transit and consolidation process at Surabaya Class I Prison before continuing their journey to Nusakambangan under tight escort led directly by the Director of Security and Intelligence of the Directorate General of Corrections, Brigadier General Pol Tatan Dirsan Atmaja. During the voyage, security personnel sterilised the ship area, placed prisoners in designated locations, and conducted layered surveillance to ensure the entire process proceeded safely and under control. Upon arrival at the Nusakambangan Correctional Complex, the prisoners underwent handover procedures, administrative checks, health examinations, and searches before being placed according to the Directorate General of Corrections’ assessment results: 15 at Karanganyar Prison, 26 at Pasir Putih Prison, 4 at Batu Prison, 10 at Gladakan Prison, 6 at Ngaseman Prison, 8 at Nusakambangan Narcotics Prison, and 10 at Besi Prison.
