79 High-Risk Inmates Transferred from Makassar Prison to Nusakambangan

A total of 79 inmates classified as high-risk at Makassar Prison (Lapas) have been transferred to Nusakambangan Island, Cilacap Regency, Central Java.

“The transfer of high-risk prisoners to Nusakambangan is part of a strategy to strengthen the penitentiary security system,” said the Head of the South Sulawesi Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections, Mulyadi, in a statement on Monday (20/7).

Mulyadi said all the transferred inmates are high-risk convicts involved in various criminal cases, adding that they will subsequently be placed according to their risk level as a measure to ensure rehabilitation can proceed more effectively without neglecting security considerations.

“This step also aims to place prisoners according to their risk level so that the rehabilitation process can run more effectively, measurably, and optimally,” he explained.

Mulyadi said the success of the transfer process was inseparable from the synergy of all officers involved in the operation.

“Strong synergy was key in supporting the creation of a safe and orderly correctional system, in line with the acceleration programme of the Minister of Immigration and Corrections to realise a penitentiary system that is increasingly professional and beneficial to society,” he said.

The Head of Makassar Prison, Gumilar Budirahayu, said prisoners proven to have committed disciplinary violations, disrupted the security and order of the prison, or who pose a high risk will be dealt with in accordance with prevailing regulations.

“Including through transfers to Nusakambangan,” said Gumilar.

According to Gumilar, placing prisoners in facilities with security levels matching their risk is part of efforts to optimise the rehabilitation process.

“For high-risk prisoners, rehabilitation will be more optimal when carried out at work units with specialised security systems and rehabilitation programmes, such as those at Nusakambangan,” he concluded.
