79 High-Risk Inmates Transferred from Makassar Prison to Nusakambangan

A total of 79 high-risk inmates from Makassar Prison have been transferred to Nusakambangan Island, Central Java. The move is part of a strategy to strengthen the correctional security system. “The transfer of high-risk inmates to Nusakambangan is part of a strategy to strengthen the correctional security system,” said Mulyadi, Head of the South Sulawesi Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections. All transferred inmates were classified as high-risk with various criminal cases. Mulyadi stated that the inmates will be placed according to their risk levels to ensure rehabilitation programmes can run more effectively. Head of Makassar Prison, Gumilar Budirahayu, said inmates proven to have committed disciplinary violations or those posing a high risk will be dealt with according to applicable regulations, including through transfer to Nusakambangan. Gumilar added that placing inmates in facilities matching their security classification is an effort to optimise the rehabilitation process. “For high-risk category inmates, rehabilitation will be more optimal if carried out in work units that have special security systems and rehabilitation programmes like in Nusakambangan,” he concluded.
