750 vendors to be relocated

JAKARTA (JP): The municipality will relocate some 750 vendors in Tanah Abang market to a 4,000-square-meter area in Kebon Jati, Central Jakarta, a city official said yesterday.

"The decision was made according to the governor's instruction. We expect the relocation will be completed this year," head of the city's informal business office, Ari Djazuli, said.

"Currently, we're still in the process of completing land appropriation to accommodate the vendors," Ari said.

The Tanah Abang vendors are to be relocated because they occupy part of the road space along the market and disturb traffic, he said.

The governor's instruction, he said, was issued on June 18 this year.

"The governor has also told the city's public order office to prevent the proliferation of new vendors at the market," Ari said. (ste)
