74 Sexual Harassment Cases Occur on KRL, Most During Rush Hour
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - PT KAI Commuter (KCI) has recorded 74 cases of suspected sexual harassment during KRL (electric rail train) journeys throughout 2025 and the first quarter of 2026.
KCI’s VP of Corporate Secretary, Karina Amanda, stated that the data was obtained from reports and monitoring of suspected sexual harassment cases on social media.
“In the first quarter of 2026, there were 20 reports. So, 54 cases throughout 2025 and 20 cases in the first quarter of 2026,” said Karina at BNI City Station, Sudirman, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday (21/8/2026).
However, she noted that the increase is due to improved awareness among KRL users in making reports.
“We see it from the positive response that more and more people are brave enough to speak up,” said Karina.
“More and more KRL users are brave enough to voice or report when they see or experience it,” she continued.
Karina revealed that, based on data recorded by KCI, the most commonly reported suspected sexual harassment involves physical touching by the alleged perpetrator to the victim.
However, there are also reports of alleged perpetrators taking photos of victims without permission while on the KRL.
Karina continued that suspected sexual harassment occurs most frequently during rush hours, namely commuting to and from work.
This is because overcrowding occurs on KRL journeys on almost all routes during rush hours.
However, Karina did not specify the number of harassment cases occurring during rush hours.
“So, if we talk about the potential for harassment or sexual violence, it is certainly linked to the condition of overcrowding,” said Karina.
“If we talk about the condition of overcrowding, it naturally spreads (across all routes) because the density is across all service lines during rush hours,” she explained.
