74,000 Companies Required to Report Environmental Management, Here's Why!
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The Minister of Environment and Forestry/Head of the Environmental Control Agency, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, stated that 74,000 business units possessing UKL-UPL (Environmental Management Efforts and Environmental Monitoring Efforts) and AMDAL are required to report routinely. This ensures supervision can be maintained every six months, accompanied by the necessary aspects.
“Through the electronic reporting information system, we will develop it to reach further by combining it with environmental compliance ranking assessments. This assessment will naturally be broad, thus definitely involving district/city governments and provincial governments,” Hanif said in his speech at the PROPER Environmental Awards, Tuesday (7/4/2026).
According to him, environmental supervision must not only be carried out by the central government but also by provincial and district/city governments.
“There is even an article that states if a regent, mayor, or even governor fails to conduct environmental supervision, and a disaster occurs resulting in someone’s death, they will face criminal penalties,” he explained.
Therefore, in the future, PROPER models must be developed more broadly, not limited to just ratings but real actions. According to him, PROPER will later be combined with supervision values and law enforcement.
“We are working with Commission 12 of the DPR RI and the Ministry of Environment to target stricter supervision of mineral and coal extraction activities,” said Hanif.
He emphasised that, together with Commission 12 of the DPR RI, they will conduct intensive supervision of 1,358 extraction activities, including coal, minerals, and other mining. This step is taken to improve environmental capacity and address water pollution.
“For that, we kindly ask for understanding that we have detailed the activities in 14 provinces, which include 1,358 company units. Therefore, for those companies that have not yet obtained the Surface Water Discharge Operation Worthiness Certificate (SLO), we request permission to freeze their environmental approvals,” Hanif stated firmly.
