71,000 Hectares of Forest and Land Fires in Six Provinces Extinguished, BNPB: Fires Still Threatening
The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has recorded that 71,274.29 hectares of land affected by forest and land fires (karhutla) have been successfully extinguished.
The land is located in six provinces, namely West Kalimantan, Riau, South Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, South Sumatra and Jambi.
“The total area burned is 72,008 hectares, of which 71,274.29 hectares have been extinguished,” said the Head of BNPB, Lieutenant General Suharyanto, on Monday, 7 September 2026.
To date, 734.81 hectares of burnt land remain, all of which is peatland. His team continues to carry out patrols to identify points where fire sources still persist.
According to him, the burned areas are peatland, which by its nature tends to reignite even after extinguishing efforts.
“Because of the peatland characteristics, we only know after parts have been extinguished, and then further patrols are conducted based on satellite monitoring by the government and the Ministry of Forestry,” he explained.
Meanwhile, Suharyanto also provided an update on fire hotspots in other provinces, such as East Kalimantan, where a number of fire points covering 458 hectares remain. These fires are located in the Nusantara Capital (IKN) area.
“In the IKN area, 458 hectares are being handled and the fires have not yet been extinguished,” he said.
Nevertheless, he assured that joint teams continue to carry out patrols to monitor the fire points that have not yet been extinguished.
