70-year-old man in PIK, North Jakarta, narrowly escapes abduction during morning exercise

Jakarta - A 70-year-old man, identified by the initials GH, narrowly escaped an alleged abduction attempt while exercising in the Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) area, Penjaringan, North Jakarta. The Penjaringan Metro Police have received a report regarding the suspected attempted kidnapping and assault. “The Penjaringan Metro Police Criminal Investigation Unit received a police report concerning an alleged attempted kidnapping and/or assault that occurred in the Pantai Indah Kapuk area,” said AKP Sampson Sosa Hutapea, Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit at Penjaringan Metro Police, on Friday. Fortunately, the victim resisted, thwarting the perpetrator’s attempt to force him into a car. The incident took place in May 2026 at around 6.55 a.m. Western Indonesian Time and is currently being handled by the Penjaringan Metro Police. The perpetrator’s actions were also recorded by CCTV cameras near the scene. Sampson explained that his unit has received the police report regarding the alleged attempted kidnapping and assault. Based on initial investigations and CCTV footage obtained by investigators, a car was seen following the victim as he walked for exercise near his residence. Shortly afterwards, a man exited the vehicle and approached the victim. The perpetrator then tried to grab the victim and force him into the car. “The perpetrator tried to pull the victim to force him into the car. The victim fought back, so the perpetrator did not succeed in the kidnapping,” Sampson clarified. The CCTV footage shows the victim and the perpetrator grappling, with both falling to the ground during the struggle. Despite his advanced age, the victim continued to resist and shouted for help. The victim’s shouts are believed to have panicked the perpetrator, who ultimately ceased his actions and fled the scene before he could abduct the victim. “The victim and the perpetrator struggled until they fell. Because the victim fought back and shouted, the perpetrator appeared frightened and then left the location,” Sampson stated. The victim is a private sector employee and has never had any issues with anyone. When questioned, the victim also stated that he did not recognise the perpetrator who tried to kidnap him.
