A devastating fire has destroyed 70 homes in the Kasepuhan Ciptamulya traditional village, Sirnaresmi Village, Cisolok District, Sukabumi Regency, forcing 420 people to flee. The blaze, which broke out on Saturday afternoon, is believed to have originated from an electrical short circuit in a public bathing, washing and toilet facility (MCK) located on the edge of the settlement.

According to the Sukabumi Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the fire spread rapidly due to the traditional architecture of the houses, which are predominantly made of wood and feature ijuk (sugar palm fibre) thatched roofs. Strong winds and the close proximity of the buildings further accelerated the destruction, levelling the homes within hours.

Kuswan Hermawan, a staff member from the BPBD’s Rehabilitation and Reconstruction division, confirmed that despite the extensive property damage, there were no fatalities or injuries. He credited the strong familial bonds and vigilance among the Kasepuhan community for the successful evacuation. Many residents were working in their gardens when the fire started, but those at home quickly assisted others in escaping the flames.

The 420 displaced residents are currently taking shelter with relatives and neighbours whose homes were spared. The BPBD, in coordination with the Social Affairs Office, is preparing emergency aid, including temporary tents, clothing, and ready-to-eat meals. Officials are working to set up temporary shelters immediately to accommodate the victims.
