The suspected mutilation case involving a man named Kunaefi (51) in Depok, West Java, is beginning to see a breakthrough. Police have detained the alleged perpetrator along with a number of pieces of evidence related to the heinous act. Based on data gathered up to 5 August 2026, here are 7 key facts regarding the Depok mutilation case: The victim was identified as Kunaefi, a resident of Cipayung, Depok. Before he was found dead, the victim’s wife had reported him missing to the authorities on 25 July 2026. The victim was known not to have returned home since 23 July 2026. Kunaefi’s body was discovered on Tuesday, 4 August 2026, at around 3.30 p.m. local time in a vacant lot in the Tanah Merah area, Pancoran Mas, Depok. Local residents initially thought the sack contained rubbish and only realised it held a human body when they were about to burn it. The victim’s condition was extremely distressing when found. The body was wrapped in plastic and a sack with the hands tied, and there was a wound on the neck. Furthermore, both of the victim’s legs were not found with the main body at the location. Police suspect the perpetrator disposed of the victim’s body parts in two different locations to cover his tracks. The main body was found in Tanah Merah, while the legs are suspected to have been discarded in a river in the Pitara area, Pancoran Mas. Based on the initial chronology, the victim became acquainted with the alleged perpetrator, named Saepul (26), through social media. The two then agreed to meet at a rented house in the Cipayung area on 23 July 2026. That meeting is suspected to have led to an argument which triggered the murder. The Sub-Directorate of Violent Crimes (Resmob) of the Metro Jaya Regional Police arrested Saepul on Wednesday, 5 August 2026, at 4.15 a.m. local time. The perpetrator was apprehended in Panimbang, Pandeglang, Banten, while attempting to flee. Police also confirmed that the victim’s motorcycle had been taken and sold by the perpetrator in the area. Investigators are still looking into the main motive behind the murder and mutilation. Although speculation has circulated regarding the background of a certain relationship, police have stressed that they have not concluded this as the official motive and are still conducting intensive examinations of the suspect. ‘The relationship between the perpetrator and the victim was merely an acquaintance, nothing more. The motive for the murder is still being investigated, but facts have been found suggesting the perpetrator is a homosexual,’ said Katimsus 2 of the Metro Jaya Regional Police Resmob, Ipda Breggy Yesaya Imanuel Sutijono.
