7.7 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Philippines, Japan Issues Tsunami Early Warning
A magnitude 7.7 earthquake has struck Mindanao, Philippines, prompting Japan to issue an early tsunami warning.
According to reports from AFP on Monday (8/6/2026), Japanese authorities issued tsunami warnings along much of its Pacific coastal regions. The Japan Meteorological Agency stated that tsunami waves up to one metre (three feet) are projected to hit various areas starting from 11:30 am local time.
It is noted that tsunamis have already occurred in several regions of Indonesia. Tsunami waves were recorded in Kedi, North Maluku; Ulu Sia; and Melonguane. In Kedi, the tsunami height reached 0.09 metres, while Ulu Sia recorded 0.18 metres and Melonguane recorded 0.19 metres.
“Detected in Kedi, North Maluku (07:20 WIB) 0.09 m, Ulu Siau (07:27 WIB) 0.18 m, Melonguane (07:27 WIB) 0.19 m #BMKG,” wrote the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG).
