Indonesia is facing a worrying surge in digital scam cases. According to data from the Financial Services Authority (OJK), the accumulated losses from cybercrime have reached Rp9.1 trillion over the period from November 2024 to January 2026.

The scale of this threat is reflected in the intensity of incoming reports, with an average of 1,000 public complaints every day. Edwin Hidayat Abdullah, Director General of Digital Ecosystem at the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs of Indonesia, emphasised the urgency of industry collaboration in addressing the cybersecurity crisis. Highlighting the alarming data, he revealed that 65% of Indonesians are exposed to scam attempts at least once a week.

“The scale of this threat demands an integrated and collaborative approach, synergising robust policies, active institutional roles, and capable technology implementation. Effective digital defence can only be achieved through cooperation across the entire ecosystem, including the vital role of digital identity security providers like VIDA,” he stated at the VIDA Beyond Liveness event in Jakarta, via a written statement on Tuesday (12/5/2026).

At the event, VIDA introduced ID FraudShield, a layered defence innovation specifically developed to identify and counter AI-based identity fraud threats in real-time.

This launch is driven by the fact that scam techniques have evolved far beyond facial manipulation. Perpetrators now use injection attacks to insert fake images directly into verification systems, emulator farms to run thousands of fake identities simultaneously, and GPS spoofing to falsify locations, all designed to bypass biometric checks undetected.

Niki Luhur, Founder and Group CEO of VIDA, explained that digital security must evolve. “We can no longer rely solely on checking the person, but must also simultaneously verify the device and network. ID FraudShield provides full visibility to detect risks that were previously undetectable by standard systems,” he said.
