South Tangerang Police (Polres Tangsel) have, following a trend seen in other regions, officially facilitated a nocturnal street-running event intended to curb potential law violations during Ramadan. Dozens of participants from various districts in South Tangerang turned out for the Fun Night Run, held on Friday night, 6 March, along Jalan Promoter in Serpong, South Tangerang. The 64 participants came from seven districts and had advanced through an initial selection at the local police sector (Polsek), along with members of the public. One participant, Deko, from Curug, said he came to join the event because he enjoys running and often takes part in races. “I really enjoy running and frequently participate in competitions. I came from Curug to join this event organised by the Tangsel Police,” he said. He added that the activity provides a platform for people with running talent to channel their skills. South Tangerang Police Chief AKBP Boy Jumalolo said the event serves as a space for the public, especially youths, to channel their sporting interests and talents. “This night run is a platform to accommodate and channel the community’s interest and talent, particularly for young people,” Boy said on the sidelines. He hopes the event can be a positive alternative activity so that youths do not engage in actions that disturb the community. “We call on participants to help maintain security and order together, and to avoid clashes and illegal street racing,” he added. The event was organised by the South Tangerang Police in collaboration with the Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) of South Tangerang City. KONI South Tangerang Chairman Mahludin welcomed the event, saying it can be a means to identify promising young runners for further coaching. “If there is potential, we will accommodate it; hopefully we can include them in KONI’s coaching,” Mahludin said. He said he was inspired by the concept and plans to adopt a similar approach with other agencies in the future. Previously, similar nocturnal running events have been facilitated by local government and police in several areas, including Pakansari in Bogor Regency, West Java, and in Riau from Pekanbaru upwards to police offices in various cities.
