609,000 Elderly Passengers Benefit from Train Fare Reductions in First Half of 2026
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) has recorded that 609,657 elderly passengers took advantage of reduced long-distance train fares between January and June 2026. This figure represents a 31.09 per cent increase from the 465,078 elderly passengers who used the facility during the same period in 2025. Throughout the whole of 2025, a total of 1,062,368 elderly customers utilised the fare reduction scheme.
As weekends approach, train travel becomes a key activity for many families. For elderly passengers, a journey can mean an opportunity to meet children and grandchildren, attend family events, undergo health check-ups, return to their hometowns, or simply enjoy time with loved ones.
Vice President of Corporate Communication at KAI, Anne Purba, stated that elderly passengers are an important part of society who deserve attention and respect during their travels. “Becoming elderly is a life stage that everyone will experience if granted a long life. Therefore, we must protect, respect, and assist them so they can travel comfortably and carry out activities independently,” she said.
According to Anne, the high number of beneficiaries shows that the need for mobility persists into old age. The railway helps elderly passengers stay connected with family, social circles, and healthcare services, as well as engage in meaningful daily activities. “Behind every journey lies a different story. There are parents wanting to visit their children, grandparents meeting their grandchildren, and customers who remain active in various pursuits. KAI aims to accompany their journeys with friendly and attentive service,” she added.
KAI provides a 20 per cent fare reduction for passengers aged 60 and above on long-distance economy, business, and executive class trains. This facility does not apply to Priority, Imperial, Panoramic, Luxury, and Compartment Suite services. To obtain the reduction, passengers must register at least two days before departure at a station customer service counter that provides registration services. Registration can be done in person by presenting a valid original identity document, or it can be represented by another person who brings the original identity document along with a passport photo or photograph of the elderly passenger to be registered. Once registered, tickets can be booked at station counters or via the Access by KAI application. Registration is required only once while the reduction facility is valid; if the validity period expires, re-registration is necessary. Through the Access by KAI app, passengers can select the “Reduksi” passenger type, enter their reduction number, select the “Cek Reduksi” menu, confirm the passenger name, and proceed with the booking process.
KAI also encourages all passengers to help create a comfortable journey for the elderly. Simple acts of consideration include giving them priority in queues, allowing them time when boarding and alighting, offering assistance when needed, and communicating politely and patiently. “Elderly people have been through a long journey in life and have given much to their families and society. It is only right that we provide a travel environment where they feel valued, safe, and remain close to those they care about,” Anne concluded.
