60,000 firecrackers seized in Kuningan

KUNINGAN, West Java: Local police confiscated around 60,000 firecrackers valued at tens of millions of rupiah during several raids on street vendors in the city over recent days.

Kuningan Police precinct chief Adios Salopa said on Wednesday, however, that no arrests had been made during the raids, which had targeted a number of traditional markets in the town.

The operation is the "first step" in securing next month's religious holidays Idul Fitri and Christmas and has involved 40 well-trained policemen, he said.

"We consider firecrackers a serious problem that could potentially spark a crime," Adios said. "Many crimes have been triggered by the use of firecrackers. Therefore, we are forced to take firm action." --JP
