6,000 villages lack electricity

ATAMBUA, East Nusa Tenggara: Some 6,000 remote villages in the country have no access to electricity, a minister said.

"We are still unable to reach these villages, which is why we have to find a solution to the problem," State Minister for Research and Technology Hatta Radjasa said after inaugurating a TV transmission tower, solar power plants and a hydroelectric power plant in the province.

"The development of solar power plants will answer the growing demand for energy in villages," Hatta said.

There are 500 solar power sources in the districts of Lamaknen, Tasifeto, East Tasifeto and Kobalima.

Hatta said the TV transmission tower would give the people greater access to information. -- Antara
