Ukraine launched 600 drones at the Moscow region in a sustained overnight assault, reportedly killing one person and injuring three others.

As reported by AFP and Reuters on Sunday (16/8/2026), the injury toll was announced by the Mayor of Moscow. Ukraine has been striking deeper into Russian territory in recent weeks with waves of drones targeting military, industrial and, most recently, e-commerce warehouses located far from the front lines of a war now entering its fifth year.

“From last night until 6.30 this morning, 600 drones flew towards the Moscow region, and 201 of them were destroyed over Moscow region,” Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin wrote on the state-backed MAX platform.

In an earlier post, Sobyanin said three people were injured in the MKAD area. Meanwhile, Moscow region Governor Andrei Vorobyov said one person was killed in the Ukrainian drone attack.

Vorobyov said an 83-year-old man was killed and several others were injured in Podolsk, where a warehouse belonging to Russia’s largest online retailer, Wildberries, was reported hit. He said there was damage at several other locations, including a warehouse in the town of Domodedovo located near one of Moscow’s main airports.

The Russian Defence Ministry said it had downed 822 Ukrainian drones across various regions of the country. Video footage taken by Reuters after the attack on the Wildberries warehouse in Koledino showed thick plumes of smoke rising above the site, located about 45 km (28 miles) south of Moscow.

Beyond Moscow, Ukrainian strikes also killed three people in the Rostov region of southern Russia, which borders Ukraine. Rostov region Governor Yuri Sliusar said three people were killed and one was hospitalised as a result of the overnight attack.

“Doctors are providing all necessary assistance,” Sliusar said.

He said Russian forces destroyed more than 150 drones and missiles over three cities and nine districts in the southern region. According to Sliusar, the attack damaged residential and industrial buildings in the Kamensky district.

Several buildings in the town of Kamensk-Shakhtinsky suffered roof damage, while windows were shattered and destroyed in an apartment block and at the town’s railway station.
