600 Google Employees Sign Protest Letter to CEO, Here's What Sparked It

Google employees have united in protesting their CEO, Sundar Pichai, triggered by plans for collaboration between Google and the United States military. The plans involve the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in various secret US military operations. This demand was conveyed through an open letter addressed to Pichai on 27 April 2026 local time in the US. In the letter, the employees highlighted the collaboration plans between Google and the US Department of Defense (Pentagon), including negotiations for using Google’s flagship AI model, Gemini AI, in classified military environments. The letter was signed by more than 600 employees from various divisions, including Google DeepMind and Google Cloud. Over 20 signatories came from senior management ranks, from directors to vice presidents. “Classified work is fundamentally non-transparent. Currently, there is no way to ensure that our tools will not be used for harmful things or to erode civil liberties,” stated one employee in the letter. Employees also worry about the potential misuse of technology, such as individual profiling to targeting innocent civilians. Google is reportedly negotiating to ensure the AI collaboration with the US military remains safe through several limiting clauses. In those negotiations, Google proposed clauses prohibiting the use of AI for domestic mass surveillance or autonomous weapons without human control. However, the Pentagon wants broader clauses, allowing the use of technology for “all lawful uses” for operational flexibility. The employees assess that such limitations are difficult to enforce technically, especially since Pentagon policies reportedly do not allow outsiders to control their AI system usage. They further emphasised that the company should reject involvement in all secret military projects for now, if management is serious about preventing the negative impacts of AI.
