60 Regions Submit Proposals to Become New Transmigration Areas
GORONTALO, KOMPAS.com - Deputy Minister of Transmigration, Viva Yoga Mauladi, has revealed that there are currently around 60 proposals from local governments submitting their regions to be opened as new transmigration areas.
This was stated by Viva in his speech during a visit to the Pulubala Transmigration Area in Gorontalo Regency on Wednesday (08/04/2026).
He mentioned that these submissions indicate the continued need for regional development, particularly in areas outside Java and Bali.
According to him, there are still several regions that remain underdeveloped and have minimal population activity. The transmigration programme is seen as a solution to open up these areas while boosting economic growth.
Furthermore, Viva explained that not all proposals can be immediately realised. To date, only a few regions have been decided upon, including Sigi Regency in Central Sulawesi and the Batam, Rempang, and Galang (Barelang) areas in the Riau Islands.
He stated that there are several requirements that local governments must meet, including the provision of land with clean and clear status, free from legal disputes.
In addition, regions must have a development plan for the transmigration area that includes flagship product potentials to support community economic activities.
Viva added that the government is currently preparing a special team to conduct detailed studies on each proposal, including aspects of land legality and economic potential.
He hopes that the future development of transmigration areas can have a significant impact on regional economic growth while opening up new job opportunities for the community.
Viva emphasised that President Prabowo Subianto has given special attention to the transmigration programme by establishing four main directives. First, to safeguard the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia.
In addition to maintaining territorial integrity, transmigration is also directed towards strengthening social integration among citizens from various backgrounds through assimilation and cultural acculturation processes via inter-ethnic marriages.
Transmigration also aims to alleviate poverty and support national food self-sufficiency.
“Second, to eradicate poverty. Because with the movement of the population, fathers and mothers certainly want to change their fate, right?” he said.
