The government plans to build 60 units of subsidised flats on land owned by the Bali Provincial Government in Denpasar City, with priority given to low-income communities (MBR), including artists.

Minister of Housing and Settlement Areas (PKP) Maruarar Sirait, or Ara, explained that land availability poses a challenge.

“Therefore, the construction of vertical housing such as flats becomes a solution so that low-income communities can still access decent and affordable housing,” said Ara on Tuesday (17/3/2026).

She emphasised that the construction of these subsidised flats is expected to commence soon, in accordance with applicable provisions and regulations.

“The design of these flats must prioritise local Balinese cultural elements to remain in harmony with the character and local wisdom of the community,” she added.

Ara also proposed that the flats be allocated to MBR working as artists, considering the important role of the arts and culture sector in supporting tourism and the economy.

On a site of approximately 3,328 square metres at Jalan Raya Sesetan, Sesetan Ward, South Denpasar Subdistrict, Denpasar City, the construction of the flats is planned as one Arunika-type tower with a maximum height of four storeys.

The housing will consist of 60 units, including two units for persons with disabilities and 58 regular units.

The construction is planned using a multi-year contract scheme, with implementation targeted from June 2026 to March 2027.

Meanwhile, Bali Governor I Wayan Koster expressed full support for the plan.

“We fully support the construction of these flats because the need for housing for the community in Bali’s urban areas is increasing, while land availability is becoming more limited. Utilising government-owned land for community housing is the right step,” said Koster.

The construction of these flats is part of the government’s efforts to expand access to decent and affordable housing for the community, especially in urban areas with land constraints.
