REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, NEW YORK – At least 60 United Nations (UN) member states have expressed support in condemning the attack that killed Indonesian peacekeeping troops in Lebanon. The situation in Lebanon due to brutal Israeli attacks has also been condemned.

On Thursday evening US time, ambassadors from dozens of countries accompanied Indonesia’s UN envoy Umar Hadi in delivering a joint statement strongly condemning “the continuous attacks against UNIFIL”. This includes the recent attack that killed three Indonesian peacekeepers in Lebanon.

The joint statement also noted that peacekeeping troops from France, Ghana, Indonesia, Nepal, and Poland were injured in the recent attack in southern Lebanon.

Those countries also expressed “deep concern over the humanitarian situation in Lebanon, particularly the high number of civilian casualties, extensive damage to civilian infrastructure, and the mass displacement of more than one million people”.

The UN has stated that initial findings indicate that one peacekeeper was likely killed by Israeli tank fire on 29 March, while the other two were killed the following day by an explosive device that the UN assesses was “most likely carried out by Hezbollah”.

Meanwhile, Italy’s Foreign Ministry summoned the Israeli ambassador on Wednesday (8/4/2026) following the incident in Lebanon that damaged an Italian vehicle for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) peacekeeping troops due to warning shots from Israel.

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, in a post on platform X, said that he had just instructed the Israeli ambassador to Italy to be summoned to Italy’s Foreign Ministry to clarify what happened in Lebanon.

Tajani also emphasised that the Italian military remains “untouchable”. This step was taken after Foreign Minister Tajani told the Italian parliament that an Italian UNIFIL convoy was hit by gunfire during an escalation of tensions.

“Israeli warning shots damaged one of our vehicles. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the convoy (Italian UNIFIL) had to return,” Tajani said as reported by ANSA News Agency.

Originally, Tajani said, the convoy was transporting personnel to Beirut for repatriation. He also warned about the intensification of Israeli operations, stating that the heaviest Israeli bombing since the resumption of the war had occurred and 150 aircraft were reported to be involved across Lebanon.
