6,604 Workers in Central Java Laid Off Throughout 2026

A total of 6,604 workers in Central Java have been affected by termination of employment throughout 2026. The textile and garment sector contributed the largest share at 51.4 per cent, followed by the manufacturing and children’s toy industry at 21.1 per cent. To address the employment needs, several regions have opened job fairs in hopes of absorbing the laid-off workers. The Demak Regency Government partnered with 30 companies to hold a job fair offering 2,480 vacancies. Similarly, Rembang Regent Harno stated that in June-July 2026, the local government organised a job fair providing 3,244 job vacancies as an effort to reduce unemployment and improve residents’ welfare. The open unemployment rate in Rembang Regency is currently recorded at 2.90 per cent. Head of the Kendal Industry and Manpower Office Cicik Sulastri said that with Kendal’s open unemployment rate reaching 4.60 per cent, her office collaborated with 30 companies and private job placement agencies to hold a job fair recruiting 3,117 workers last July. Head of the Central Java Manpower and Transmigration Office Ahmad Aziz separately stated that as of the end of July 2026, the number of workers laid off in the province reached 6,604 people across various companies in different regions. Based on data, the textile and garment sector contributed the most layoffs at 51.4 per cent, followed by the manufacturing and children’s toy industry at 21.1 per cent, the wood and furniture industry at 12.5 per cent, and the eyelash industry at 9.4 per cent. Companies that carried out layoffs include PT Citra Busana Semesta in Sukoharjo with 920 workers, PT Victory Apparel in Semarang with 846 workers, PT Combine Will Industrial Indonesia with 849 workers, PT Samwon Busana Indonesia in Jepara with 685 workers, PT Sas Kreasindo Utama in Tegal with 681 workers, and PT Cosmoprof Indokarya in Purbalingga with 620 workers.
