6.3 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Northeastern Japan, Shinkansen Operations Suspended
A 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck northeastern Japan on Friday evening. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) confirmed that no tsunami warning was issued following the earthquake.
According to JMA data, the earthquake occurred at 8:22 PM local time. The epicenter of the earthquake was located off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture, at a depth of approximately 50 kilometers below the surface.
This earthquake in Japan reached a seismic intensity of 7 on the Japanese seismic scale (level 5 being the lowest) in several areas of Miyagi Prefecture. Meanwhile, a seismic intensity of 4 was reported in Iwate Prefecture and other parts of Miyagi Prefecture.
The strong tremors directly impacted the public transportation sector. JR East railway operator reported significant disruptions to Shinkansen bullet train services.
Shinkansen services between Tokyo and Aomori Prefecture on the Tohoku Shinkansen line were temporarily suspended following the earthquake for safety inspections.
Given the location of the earthquake in the northeastern region, attention turned to nuclear facilities in the area. However, the operator of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) confirmed that the situation remained under control.
The operator stated that no anomalies or damage were reported at the Fukushima Daiichi NPP following the earthquake. As of this report, local authorities are continuing to monitor for potential building damage or injuries in the areas most affected.
