6.3 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Japan, No Tsunami Warning Issued

Tokyo (ANTARA) - An earthquake with an initial magnitude of 6.3 struck northeastern Japan on Friday, with no tsunami warning issued, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The earthquake, which occurred at 8:22 PM local time, was centered off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture, approximately 50 kilometers below the surface, it said.

The quake was recorded on the Japanese seismic intensity scale as 7 (lowest 5) in several areas of Miyagi Prefecture and intensity 4 in Iwate and parts of Miyagi.

According to JR East, high-speed rail services between Tokyo and Aomori Prefecture on the Tohoku Shinkansen line were suspended following the earthquake.

No abnormalities were reported at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in northeastern Japan, the operator said.
