6.2 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Parigi, Central Sulawesi; One Person Reported Dead

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that a magnitude 6.2 earthquake shook Parigi Moutong Regency, Central Sulawesi, at 11:25 pm local time.

The earthquake resulted in the death of one woman, Wiwi Putri (29), who suffered a heart attack. The seismic event occurred in Tomini Bay.

“Yes, it is true (the woman died from) a heart attack. She was taken to the Mepanga Community Health Centre that same night but died en route,” said Acting Head of the Parigi Moutong Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Moh Rivai, to reporters.

The earthquake was located at coordinates 0.25 degrees North latitude and 120.22 degrees East longitude, or 74 kilometres southwest of Parigi Moutong Regency, Central Sulawesi Province. The tremor had a depth of 44 kilometres.

In its statement, BMKG said the earthquake had no tsunami potential.

Meanwhile, Rangga, a resident of Palu City, said he also felt the tremors from the earthquake centred in Parigi Moutong Regency.

“Yes, the shaking was quite noticeable in Palu City,” he said.
