570 People Killed in Lebanon from Israeli Attacks
Defence Minister Prabowo has convened another limited meeting to discuss the impact of war in the Middle East region.
At least 570 people have been reported killed and 1,444 others wounded as a result of Israeli military attacks in Lebanon since early March. The attacks have triggered waves of large-scale displacement in several affected areas.
“The total number of casualties from Israeli aggression since 2 March has reached 570 people, with 1,444 wounded,” stated Lebanon’s government crisis centre on Tuesday (10/3).
Tensions escalated after several rockets were fired from Lebanese territory towards Israel in early March. The Lebanese Shia group Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the attack.
In response, the Israeli military launched large-scale retaliatory strikes targeting various areas in Lebanon, including densely populated regions.
Several attacks were also reported to have occurred in the capital Beirut, triggering panic among civilians. As a result of the conflict escalation, hundreds of thousands of Lebanese residents have reportedly begun leaving their homes to seek shelter in areas considered safer.
This displacement wave has heightened concerns regarding the humanitarian impact of the increasingly heated Middle Eastern conflict.
The conflict in Lebanon intensified after Hezbollah attacked Israel in response to the killing of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran stated that four of its diplomats were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a hotel in Beirut last week.
Israel has continued to launch airstrikes across several areas of Lebanon. Iran has also accused the European Union of hypocrisy and double standards after the bloc’s foreign policy chief criticised Hezbollah’s attacks on Israel.
Israeli fighter jets have continued to conduct airstrikes in southern Lebanon, with at least six people killed and ten others wounded in an Israeli drone strike in eastern Lebanon.
