55 Pilgrims from Central Java Die During 2026 Hajj
A total of 55 pilgrims from Central Java Province died while performing the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage. Most of the deceased were elderly. According to the Public Relations officer for the Solo Embarkation Hajj Organising Committee, Nabiila Azka Amalia, 50 pilgrims died in the Holy Land, either before, during, or after the peak of the Hajj. One pilgrim died on the flight from the Holy Land back to Indonesia, and four pilgrims died on home soil. Of the four who died in Indonesia, three passed away after arriving in Solo, while one died during transit at Kualanamu Airport before departing for the Holy Land. Nabiila stated that the average age of the deceased pilgrims was elderly, including those who died in Indonesia. She noted that exhaustion was likely a contributing factor, given that the peak Hajj activities require significant physical stamina in weather conditions vastly different from those in Indonesia. During the pilgrimage, temperatures reportedly reached 47 degrees Celsius. Nabiila mentioned that weather factors played a role in the deaths of pilgrims, particularly those from the Solo embarkation point. Some pilgrims experienced shortness of breath, initially indicated as a symptom possibly caused by exhaustion. Several elderly pilgrims also had pre-existing medical conditions, such as heart disease and lung problems, and were pronounced dead following exhaustion. As of Tuesday, the Solo Embarkation Hajj Organising Committee had received the return of 80 flight groups, totalling 28,617 pilgrims. The arrival of the 81st and final flight group at Adi Soemarmo Airport today marks the conclusion of the repatriation operation for Solo embarkation pilgrims for the 2026 season.
