53rd Armed Forces Civic Mission opens

JAKARTA (JP): City military commander Maj. Gen. Sutiyoso said yesterday that the soldiers taking part in the 53rd edition of the Armed Forces Civic Mission would join forces with the public and students to handle floods in the capital and its surrounding areas during the rainy season.

Sutiyoso made the remark at the opening of the 53rd edition of the Armed Forces Civic Mission at the compound of the Central Jakarta mayoralty office.

This year's mission is being held simultaneously in Central Jakarta, West Jakarta, South Jakarta, Tangerang and Bekasi. Students from various high schools are also participating.

"Since this year's activities are being held during the rainy season, the chief target of the mission is to cope with imminent flooding," Sutiyoso said. He explained that the soldiers will work with students to repair gutters, drainage systems and bridges as well as to clean up rivers. (bas)
