53 Nusakambangan Maximum Security Inmates Transferred to Medium Security Prison

The Class IIA Besi Prison on Nusakambangan has transferred 53 inmates to a medium-security facility. The strategic move, carried out on Wednesday (1 July), is part of the corrections revitalisation programme and the phased rehabilitation of inmates who have shown significant behavioural changes.

The transfer operation was led directly by the Head of Besi Prison, Muda Husni, under strict guard from correctional officers and police personnel. The entire process, from preparation in the residential blocks to the administrative handover at the destination prison, proceeded safely, orderly, and without incident.

Kalapas Besi, Muda Husni, explained that the transfer was not merely a routine rotation but a form of recognition for the inmates’ commitment to the rehabilitation programme. ‘The transfer of these 53 inmates from maximum security to medium security is based on the results of the Correctional Observer Team (TPP) meeting. They were assessed as having met the substantive and administrative requirements and have shown a reduction in behavioural risk levels,’ said Muda Husni during the activity.

Similarly, the Head of the Besi Prison Security Unit, Heka, emphasised that the entire transfer process adhered to strict security standard operating procedures to anticipate any potential disturbances. ‘Although they are being moved to a prison with a lower security level to undergo further rehabilitation, the movement of personnel and inmates was carried out with full vigilance. The synergy between prison officers and law enforcement ensured that all risk mitigation processes ran optimally,’ Heka stated.

Through this transfer to a medium-security prison, the 53 inmates are expected to gain wider access to independence-building programmes and vocational training, in preparation for their eventual reintegration into the community.
