The devastating explosion that destroyed 12 houses and killed one person in Mimbo hamlet, Sumberanyar village, Banyuputih, Situbondo, has been confirmed to have originated from firecrackers. Police discovered a crater measuring 52 centimetres in diameter and 7 centimetres deep at the site of the blast.

"This is actually still categorised as low explosives, still in the low range. Although it still caused significant impact, both in terms of lives and material damage," said Situbondo Police Chief AKBP Bayu Anuwar Sidiqie on Friday (20 February 2026).

The crime scene investigation also uncovered several pieces of evidence relating to the production of firecrackers in considerable quantities.

Meanwhile, the injured victims are still receiving treatment in hospital. They have sustained burns covering up to 50 per cent of their bodies.

"The victims are still in intensive care at the hospital. They are still in shock and cannot yet be questioned. Their burns exceed 50 per cent," he explained.

According to the latest information, Suryadi (50), the deceased victim, was not in fact a firecracker maker but rather a neighbour who happened to be repairing a warehouse door not far from the explosion site.
