500 Permanent Homes for Disaster Victims Completed, 7,952 More Units to Be Built
The government has announced that 500 permanent housing units (huntap) for disaster victims in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra have been completed. A further 7,952 huntap units, funded by the state budget (APBN), are targeted to begin construction in September 2026.
Minister of Housing and Settlement Areas Maruarar Sirait stated that the tender process for the new construction is already underway. The government is now focused on resolving land readiness issues at several locations. “We have reported to the Home Affairs Minister that the tender process is running. We are ready to start building in September,” Maruarar said during a press conference at the Home Affairs Ministry in Central Jakarta on Tuesday (21/7/2026).
He urged regional governments to promptly settle land matters to prevent project delays. He also stressed that relocation sites must be safe from potential disasters and remain close to public facilities to ensure residents are willing to occupy them. “From the start, I asked that the land prepared be truly safe. We must not move people affected by a disaster to an unsafe area,” he said. The government is also considering access to schools, markets, hospitals, and places of worship. “So that it doesn’t end up empty; if it’s built too far away, no one will want to live there,” he explained.
Maruarar noted that outside the state budget programme, progress has been made through a mutual cooperation scheme, with 500 permanent homes already completed out of a target of 2,603 units. “Around 500 permanent homes have been finished, not temporary shelters, but permanent homes across the three provinces,” he said. These homes will soon be handed over to the community, as disaster survivors are urgently waiting for housing certainty.
Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian added that the construction of the 7,952 units will be spread across 54 locations, covering a total land area of 198.21 hectares. The Rp 2.2 trillion budget will fund communal or ex-situ housing developments, with 6,220 units in Aceh, 919 units in North Sumatra, and 813 units in West Sumatra.
