500 Hectares of Productive Land Converted into Housing Each Year
The Tasikmalaya Regency government in West Java is converting 500 hectares of productive agricultural land into residential and plantation areas annually. The agricultural land, spread across 39 sub-districts, covers 48,000 hectares.
Head of the Infrastructure and Agricultural Facilities Division at the Agriculture, Food Security and Fisheries Office (DKPP) of Tasikmalaya Regency, Nurul Fajar Sidiq, said that the area has 48,000 hectares of agricultural land, and each year, much of this productive land is converted into housing and plantations.
“In the area, approximately 500 hectares of land are converted into residential and plantation areas each year. The planned ratification of the Presidential Regulation on the prohibition of converting rice fields will be useful in supporting national food self-sufficiency and food security,” he said on Wednesday (February 25, 2026).
According to Nurul, the regional government, as an extension of the central government, supports the plan to create a Presidential Regulation on productive rice fields not being converted. However, in the field, there are indeed obstacles, especially since the rice fields are privately owned, and there are no regulations that can bind.
“Many people claim that their rice fields have been built upon for housing, and the regional government cannot prohibit this. However, the protection of productive rice fields is still awaiting technical regulations from the central government because there must be technical rules to regulate land and rice fields owned by the community,” he said.
According to Nurul, many people have been using their private rice fields to build houses, so the existence of regional regulations is important so that the conversion of land in Tasikmalaya Regency can be controlled without ignoring ownership rights. However, if the new Presidential Regulation is issued, the regional government must immediately prepare derivative legal umbrellas.
“If the new Presidential Regulation is issued, the regional government will discuss it first so that the rules are clearer and more mature, even though the discussion must involve the DPRD and the Regent to create derivative rules to protect productive rice fields. The increase in the population, the birth of children who marry and build houses, so that 500 hectares are built with houses,” he concluded. (H-3)
