50 Porters and Guides at Mount Rinjani Equipped with Certification and Competency Tests
As many as 50 porters and guides in the Mount Rinjani area have been granted certification and undergone competency tests. This certification and competency testing was carried out by the Ministry of Tourism (Kemenpar) and the Mount Rinjani National Park Authority as an effort to improve professionalism and the quality of tourism services at Mount Rinjani.
The Head of the NTB Tourism and Creative Economy Office, Ahmad Nur Aulia, stated that strengthening the capacity of tourism human resources is one of the main keys to realising a world-class destination at Mount Rinjani.
“We believe that mountain guides play an important role as the frontline that interacts directly with tourists. Therefore, competencies, service ethics, and understanding of safety aspects must continue to be improved,” said Aulia when confirmed on Sunday (19/4/2026).
Aulia said that the certification and competency testing for porters and guides was centred in Senaru, one of the main gateways for climbing Mount Rinjani. All participants followed the certification and competency testing process as part of efforts to ensure that field guides have official legality and nationally recognised expertise.
“So hiking tourism is not just a physical activity, but a sector that is highly dependent on safety aspects and environmental conservation,” Aulia emphasised.
Aulia stated that the participants were tested on various abilities, ranging from navigation techniques, emergency response procedures, tourist services to in-depth knowledge of the Mount Rinjani ecosystem. The competency testing and certification is a concrete step in supporting the vision of a world-class NTB through the development of quality and sustainable tourism.
“We want to ensure that tourists coming to Rinjani not only enjoy its natural beauty but also experience safe, comfortable, and professional services,” said Aulia.
The Head of the North Lombok Tourism Office, Dende Dewi Tresni Budiastuti, said that certification for guides at Mount Rinjani is important to support orderly, safe climbing management while maintaining environmental preservation through the application of leave no trace principles.
Dende said that tourist guides are the spearhead of the region’s tourism image. Confidence from domestic and international tourists in the Mount Rinjani destination is expected to increase with the presence of competent and certified guides.
“We hope that the quality of tourism human resources in NTB will become stronger and able to strengthen Mount Rinjani’s position as a world-class hiking tourism destination that is safe, professional, and sustainable,” Dende hoped.
