50 Monks to Walk from Bali to Borobudur to Welcome Vesak
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Fifty monks or bhantes will undertake the Indonesia Walk for Peace, a spiritual journey from 7 to 31 May 2026 starting in Bali to Borobudur Temple in Magelang, Central Java, to welcome Tri Suci Waisak 2570 BE/2026.
“The Bikkhu Indonesia Walk for Peace 2026 will start from Bali,” said Supriyadi, Director General of Buddhist Community Guidance at the Ministry of Religious Affairs, during the Borobudur Workshop Roadshow in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Supriyadi explained that these monks will not only come from Indonesia but also from other Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, and Malaysia.
“We are now shifting to Bali because Bali also has many sites related to Buddhism. So the monks will go to Bali first,” said Supriyadi.
This Walk for Peace, according to Supriyadi, is part of Vesakha Sananda 2026 in welcoming Tri Suci Waisak.
The commemoration of Tri Suci Waisak 2570 BE, falling on 31 May 2026, carries the theme “Dharma Safeguards World Peace” and forms part of the support for the Minister of Religious Affairs’ Eight Priority Programmes.
The series of Vesakha Sananda 2026 events, held over a full month, includes the practice of Atthangasila, meditation, and Dhamma classes, as well as vegetarian Upavasa.
Other activities include the Upavasa and Berdana Paramita Movement as a manifestation of virtuous practice and self-control, the Eco Enzyme Movement through education on making environmentally friendly liquids, the National Pindapata Gema Waisak as a means to strengthen relations between the Sangha and the laity, and the organisation of the Vesak Festival 2026 as a space for cultural and spiritual expression of the Buddhist community.
The series of other activities encompasses the Gerakan Hening Nusantara, the Borobudur Workshop Roadshow in various regions, and the spiritual journey of Indonesia Walk for Peace 2026 from Bali to Borobudur Temple.
The peak of the Waisak commemoration will be carried out through Puja Bhakti on 31 May 2026 in viharas, cetiyas, schools, and/or Buddhist temples throughout Indonesia.
