50 juvenile inmates at Maros LPKA to receive remission

Around 50 juvenile inmates at the Maros Class II Special Child Development Institution (LPKA) are projected to receive remission, or sentence reductions, in conjunction with the 81st anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia’s independence.

“This momentum brings hope for dozens of juvenile inmates at the Maros Class II Special Child Development Institution (LPKA), as around 50 juvenile inmates are projected to receive remission,” said Head of Maros Class II LPKA Irdiansyah Rana in Maros on Friday.

He said that of the 82 juvenile inmates currently undergoing rehabilitation, 60 had previously been proposed to receive remission.

The amount of remission received by each juvenile inmate varies according to their sentence and applicable regulations. The largest proposed sentence reduction reaches three months.

Irdiansyah explained that remission is granted not solely because of the independence momentum, but also as recognition for juvenile inmates who have shown positive changes during the rehabilitation process.

One of the main requirements for receiving remission is good behaviour and active participation in the various rehabilitation programmes organised by the LPKA.

Every juvenile inmate is required to attend education while at the LPKA. Thus, after completing their rehabilitation period, they are expected to be able to continue their education outside the institution.

Maros LPKA also considers family and community support to be an important part of the reintegration process for children after their release. Therefore, the public is expected not to attach negative stigma to children who have completed their rehabilitation period.

Irdiansyah hopes that children who receive remission or who have been released can be accepted back into their social environment and have the opportunity to improve their future.
