A total of 50 personnel from the West Jakarta Fire and Rescue Service (Gulkarmat) successfully extinguished a fire in an area of piled rubbish and scrap yards on Jalan Darussalam, RT 14/RW 06, Cengkareng Timur, on Tuesday morning.

“The final deployment totalled 10 units with a strength of 50 personnel. The extinguishing operation is complete,” said Head of the West Jakarta Gulkarmat Sub-department, Syaiful Kahfi, when confirmed in Jakarta on Tuesday.

He stated that the first report of the fire was received at around 4:48 a.m. Western Indonesia Time (WIB). Officers were immediately dispatched to the location and began extinguishing the blaze at 4:56 a.m. WIB. After battling the fire for more than an hour, the flames were finally extinguished at around 6:32 a.m. WIB.

“There were no casualties,” said Syaiful.

According to him, the fire is suspected to have started from a burning pile of rubbish. The flames from the rubbish then spread and engulfed the scrap yards around the location. However, his party does not know how the rubbish at the site initially caught fire. “The cause is not yet known. Essentially, information from local residents indicates the fire initially came from the rubbish there,” he said.

In a viral video uploaded by the Instagram account @warga.jakbar, towering flames could be seen from a distance, along with thick black smoke billowing high into the air.
