5 Ways to Remove Stubborn Whiteheads on the Face
Whiteheads occur when the pores become clogged with oil, dead skin cells and dirt but have not yet become inflamed. They can develop into larger pimples if repeatedly touched or squeezed. Dr. Robin Evans of SoCo Dermatology, Connecticut, says poor skincare habits are a major driver of whitehead formation. One of the most common but often overlooked causes is the use of makeup or skincare products that are too heavy for the skin. Products high in oil can make pores more prone to blockage, especially for those with oily or combination skin. Dr. Evans advises avoiding products containing mineral oil, petrolatum and cocoa butter, as these ingredients can trap dirt in the pores. Instead, opt for products labelled oil-free and non-comedogenic to minimise pore blockage. In addition to helping reduce whiteheads, such products tend to feel lighter on the skin. Regularly replacing makeup is also important, as old makeup can harbour bacteria and worsen skin conditions. Washing the face alone is not enough to remove all dust and oil; those prone to whiteheads should use cleansers with active ingredients such as salicylic acid or glycolic acid. “Using cleansers containing glycolic acid or salicylic acid can help prevent whiteheads,” Evans says. However, the use of these products should be tailored to skin type. If used too frequently, the skin can become dry, red and irritated. Therefore, using them once a day is usually sufficient to keep the skin clean.
