JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Peranakan batik fabrics are known for their strong visual character through a combination of bright colours, detailed motifs, and a distinctive artistic nuance. Pairing Peranakan batik fabrics with other garments requires careful consideration to ensure the overall look remains harmonious and does not appear excessive. Choosing the wrong colour or style of top can actually make the entire look appear too busy.

Designer Maya Ratih shares several tips on how to pair Peranakan batik fabrics to maintain a harmonious look.

Peranakan batik generally comes in bright colours and striking motifs. Therefore, choosing a top with a neutral nuance is considered the safest option to create an elegant look.

“Usually, for bright colours like this Peranakan batik, the safest option is to wear a broken white kebaya,” Maya explained at the Peranakan Batik Acculturation Exhibition, at the Kompas Tower, Central Jakarta, Wednesday (13/5/2026).

A broken white colour gives a clean and soft impression so that it does not clash with the dominant fabric pattern. In addition, neutral colours also give space for the batik motif to become the centre of attention.

This choice is suitable for formal occasions such as weddings, large family gatherings, or cultural events that require an elegant appearance.

In addition to choosing neutral colours, Maya suggests paying attention to the small colour details found in the batik motif.

“It can also be adjusted to the colours in the batik. For example, if the dominant colour of the batik is blue but there is a touch of light yellow, then use light yellow for the top,” she suggested.

This method helps create visual continuity between the top and bottom. Taking accent colours from the batik motif makes the overall look feel more conceptual and not just randomly paired.

This technique also gives a modern impression because it allows for the exploration of fresher colours, without losing the traditional character of the batik fabric itself.

A common mistake when wearing Peranakan batik is pairing it with other garments that also have too many details.
