5 Reasons Civil Servants Skip Work: Remote Postings and Economic Woes

Jakarta - A number of State Civil Apparatus (ASN) have been dismissed in the 2025-2026 period for a variety of reasons. Head of the National Civil Service Agency (BKN) and Deputy Chairman of the State Civil Apparatus Advisory Board (BPASN), Zudan Arif Fakrulloh, has revealed the reasons why these civil servants skipped work, leading to their dismissal.

He stated that 128 ASN who filed administrative appeals after being dismissed for absenteeism cited five main reasons, ranging from being ill without a doctor’s certificate, having a remote or isolated workplace, to economic problems. “The various reasons for not coming to work include being sick without a doctor’s certificate, the workplace being far or remote, caring for parents, and economic or domestic problems,” Zudan told CNBC Indonesia on Friday (10/7/2026).

Zudan had previously detailed that of the total ASN dismissed for absenteeism, 128 individuals comprised 75 ASN sacked throughout 2025 and 53 ASN during the current year of 2026. “BPASN is taking action against ASN who submit administrative appeals, among other reasons, for being dismissed due to not coming to work or absenteeism,” Zudan said.

Of the 75 ASN dismissed for absenteeism in 2025, the majority came from the civil servant (PNS) formation, totalling 64 people, while government employees with work agreements (PPPK) accounted for 11 people. In the 2026 period, 53 ASN have been recorded as dismissed for absenteeism so far, with the majority still from the PNS formation at 49 people and 4 from the PPPK formation. Overall, 113 PNS have been dismissed for absenteeism, compared to only 15 PPPK.
