5 Download Links for Indonesian History Books Released by the Ministry of Culture
The Ministry of Culture (Kemenbud) of the Republic of Indonesia has officially launched the book series ‘Indonesian History: National Dynamics in a Global Flow’. The first five volumes have been released, while the remaining six are expected to follow.
“We are launching the first five first; the remaining 6-11 depend on how long, Sir Director General? September-October,” stated the Indonesian Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, at the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education Building A, Jakarta, on Monday (30/8/2024).
Fadli Zon explained that physical copies of the Indonesian History books will be printed in limited quantities and distributed to libraries. However, the general public can read and download them for free through the pustakabudaya.id website.
“All public files launched today can be downloaded for free by the wider community through the digital platform pustakabudaya.id,” he clarified.
The five available volumes, which comprise approximately 5,700 pages in total, cover various eras of Indonesian history:
Volume I: Roots of Nusantara Civilization
Volume II: Nusantara in Global Networks: Cultural Encounters with India, China, and Persia
Volume III: Nusantara in Global Networks: The Middle East
Volume IV: Early Interaction with the West: Competition and Alliances
Volume V: Indonesian Society and the Formation of the Colonial State 1800-1900
An overview of the content reveals that Volume I discusses the early journey of human life in the archipelago, including maritime navigation and ancient cave paintings. Volume II explores interactions with Indian, Chinese, and Persian civilisations, while Volume III focuses on connections with the Islamic world via Indian Ocean trade routes since the 7th century.
Volume IV examines the arrival of European powers such as the Portuguese, Spanish, and Dutch, highlighting the era of trade monopolies and resistance from local kingdoms. Finally, Volume V focuses on the formation of the colonial state following the collapse of the VOC, detailing the administrative, economic, and social transformations that eventually fostered national consciousness.
