5,950 Indonesian Nationals Receive Overstay Fine Waiver from Cambodia
JAKARTA — The Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Phnom Penh has obtained approval from the Cambodian Government regarding the waiver of overstay fines for Indonesian nationals (WNI) involved in online fraud syndicates, totalling 5,950 people.
The Acting Chargé d’Affaires of the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh, Krishnajie, stated that the embassy continues to optimise the protection and facilitation of repatriation for Indonesian nationals amid a growing number of cases due to ongoing online fraud eradication operations.
“The Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh continues to facilitate the waiver of overstay fines, which is a form of support from the Cambodian Government to accelerate the repatriation of Indonesian nationals,” Krishnajie said.
“The embassy urges all Indonesian nationals who have obtained travel documents or approval for fine waivers to return to Indonesia immediately,” he added.
A total of 9,537 Indonesian nationals reported and sought assistance from the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh during the period from mid-January to 22 May 2026. Of these, 3,630 have been facilitated to return to Indonesia.
Krishnajie explained that most Indonesian nationals cited difficulties in returning to Indonesia, ranging from lacking passports, being burdened by substantial overstay fines, to insufficient funds to purchase return tickets.
For Indonesian nationals who have received fine waivers, the Cambodian Government has set a deadline of 15 June 2026 for their return to Indonesia.
In addition to facing immigration administrative issues, some Indonesian nationals are also experiencing financial hardship to meet basic needs whilst awaiting repatriation. Consequently, the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh has established temporary shelter facilities for Indonesian nationals in need. The shelter capacity has reached its maximum, currently accommodating approximately 300 Indonesian nationals.
This measure is necessary to provide capacity for handling other Indonesian nationals who are still awaiting administrative processing and repatriation.
Beyond those who self-reported, the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh noted that there are currently approximately 400 Indonesian nationals from online fraud networks who were apprehended in raids by Cambodian police and are being held in various detention facilities.
