5.5 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Sunda Strait, BMKG Confirms No Tsunami Potential

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 that shook the Sunda Strait region, several kilometres from Banten Province, early on Wednesday morning. The BMKG confirmed the earthquake did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami. BMKG Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis, Wijayanto, stated that based on parameter analysis, the earthquake was caused by plate subduction activity. ‘The earthquake has a thrust fault movement mechanism with a focal depth of 43 kilometres. Modelling results show no tsunami potential,’ he said on Wednesday, 8 July 2026. He explained that the epicentre of the earthquake was located at geographic coordinates 6.83° South latitude and 105.04° East longitude, precisely in the sea 62 kilometres southwest of Sumur, Pandeglang Regency, Banten. The BMKG Earthquake Directorate team confirmed, based on shake map estimates and public reports, that the vibrations from this earthquake were felt in the Sumur area, several other areas in Pandeglang, and Bogor Regency, West Java, with an intensity scale of IV-III MMI. An intensity scale of IV MMI indicates that during the day, shaking is felt by many people inside houses, some people outside, and causes pottery to break, windows or doors to creak, and walls to make sounds. For intensity scale III MMI, vibrations are felt as if a large truck is passing by. No signs of aftershock activity were detected by the BMKG system, at least until 03:05 WIB. The BMKG urged the public to remain calm and not be influenced by the spread of unverified issues. For residents in the affected area, they were reminded to carefully check the condition of their homes and avoid buildings that are cracked or damaged due to the earthquake’s impact to ensure safety.
