473 Hotspots Detected in South Kalimantan, Nearly All Areas in Red Zone for Forest and Land Fires

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has detected 473 hotspots in South Kalimantan as of Tuesday (25/8/2026). The hotspots are spread across 11 regencies and cities, with the highest concentrations in Hulu Sungai Selatan Regency, Tapin Regency, and Banjar Regency.

Weather forecaster at the Syamsudin Noor Meteorological Station, Utari Randiana, explained that the data was sourced from the Kalimantan Hotspot Information System as of Tuesday at 07.00 WITA. Of the 13 regions, only Banjarmasin City and Balangan Regency recorded no hotspots.

“Of the total 473 hotspots, 425 are categorised as medium, 32 as high, and 16 as low. The medium category is the most dominant, accounting for approximately 89.9 percent,” Utari said in Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan, on Tuesday (25/8).

BMKG mapped medium-category hotspots across 11 regions, including Banjar, Barito Kuala, Hulu Sungai Selatan, Hulu Sungai Tengah, Hulu Sungai Utara, Kotabaru, Tabalong, Tanah Bumbu, Tanah Laut, Tapin, and Banjarbaru City.

Meanwhile, high-confidence hotspots were detected in seven areas: Banjar, Barito Kuala, Hulu Sungai Selatan, Hulu Sungai Tengah, Tanah Bumbu, Tapin, and Banjarbaru City.

Hulu Sungai Selatan Regency recorded the highest number of hotspots at 118, followed by Tapin Regency with 102 and Banjar Regency with 99. The remaining hotspots were scattered across Barito Kuala, Hulu Sungai Tengah, Hulu Sungai Utara, Banjarbaru City, Kotabaru, Tabalong, Tanah Bumbu, and Tanah Laut.

As the number of hotspots surged, BMKG issued a forest and land fire danger warning system as of Tuesday (25/8/2026). The analysis showed that nearly all areas of the 13 regencies and cities in South Kalimantan are now classified as red zones.

This red zone status indicates that the likelihood of forest and land fires occurring in South Kalimantan is at a very high level.
