457 Fires Occur in Jakarta from July to August, West Jakarta Most Affected

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has revealed that 457 fires occurred in Jakarta during the period of July to August 2026. West Jakarta and East Jakarta have emerged as the regions with the highest fire potential.

“Based on reports from the Regional Disaster Management Agency, there were 457 fire incidents in Jakarta from July to August,” said Pramono while leading the Jakarta Guarding Ceremony for Dry Season Preparedness 2026 at Monas, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday (2/9/2026).

Pramono stated that the number of fires in August reached approximately 240 incidents. He noted that electrical short circuits are the most dominant cause of fires in Jakarta.

“The most dominant suspected cause is electrical short circuits. Secondly, it is waste burning, and there are also several incidents caused by negligence, such as improper disposal of cigarette butts, and so on,” he said.

Pramono also revealed that West Jakarta is the area with the highest number of fires, followed by East Jakarta. “First, regarding the 457 fires, the highest number occurred in West Jakarta, followed by East Jakarta. These two areas indeed have the highest potential; in the West, there is Tambora District, and in the East, there is Cakung—that is the map,” he explained.

To anticipate fires, Pramono has requested the availability of portable fire extinguishers (APAR) down to the RW (community unit) level. According to him, this programme is already underway in Jakarta.

“As for the fire extinguishers, I am requesting that every RW possesses them. Since this programme is already running, I am confident that every RW now has them,” he added.

In addition to fires, the Jakarta Provincial Government is also anticipating the impact of the dry season, specifically drought. Pramono stated that 29 water tankers from 10 agencies and institutions have been prepared to assist in the distribution of clean water. He mentioned that two sub-districts have already experienced drought, namely Kalibaru and Semper.

“As you can see today, there are two sub-districts that have indeed experienced drought, namely Kalibaru and Semper sub-districts,” he revealed.

Pramono emphasised that preparedness for the dry season should not only be undertaken after a disaster has occurred. He requested all regional apparatus to understand the potential risks in their respective areas and prepare mitigation steps.

“I do not want the entire ranks to only move after a problem has occurred,” he asserted.
