450 Residents Displaced and 60 Trapped by Flooding in Agam

The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Agam Regency, West Sumatra, recorded that 450 residents were displaced and 60 people were trapped by flooding that struck Nagari Sungai Batang, Tanjung Raya District, on Saturday evening (18/6).

"The 450 residents evacuated to relatives’ homes that were safe from the flood," said Abdul Ghafur, Head of Emergency and Logistics at BPBD Agam, in Lubuk Basung on Sunday (19/7).

The trapped residents, comprising 20 families with a total of 60 individuals, were affected by the strong water currents. "The victims carried out self-evacuation, and some were evacuated by a joint team from BPBD Agam, Basarnas, PMI, the police, the military, and others," Abdul Ghafur stated.

Meanwhile, in Jorong Labuah, 250 residents were displaced after 20 housing units were submerged in water approximately 70 centimetres deep. The flooding inundated the two jorong after high-intensity rainfall affected the area from Saturday afternoon (18/7) through the evening. As a result, the Batang Tumayo river overflowed and flooded residents’ homes along its banks.

"This is a recurring flood, as the river has experienced siltation following a flash flood that hit the area at the end of November 2025," Abdul Ghafur noted.

There were no fatalities from this incident, and the floodwaters have begun to recede, with some residents already starting to return to their homes. Nevertheless, he urged the public to remain vigilant and to evacuate immediately when rainfall is particularly heavy.
