The Directorate General of Corrections under the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections granted Special Remissions and Special Sentence Reductions for Lunar New Year 2026 to 44 Confucian inmates across Indonesia on Tuesday (17 February).

Minister of Immigration and Corrections Agus Andrianto stated that the granting of special remissions and sentence reductions represents the state's recognition of inmates who have demonstrated positive behavioural changes during their rehabilitation period.

"The state honours those who have shown positive changes during their rehabilitation, one form of which is through the granting of Special Remissions and Special Sentence Reductions during this Lunar New Year celebration," Agus said in a written statement.

Of the 44 recipients, 43 were prisoners receiving first-category Special Remissions, with the following breakdown: 11 received 15-day remissions, 25 received one-month remissions, three received one-month-and-15-day remissions, and four received two-month remissions.

In addition, one juvenile detainee received a first-category Special Sentence Reduction of 15 days.

Agus emphasised that remissions and sentence reductions are granted selectively and objectively to inmates who have met both administrative and substantive requirements in accordance with prevailing legislation.

"These are granted selectively and objectively. Beyond serving as recognition for good behaviour, this policy is also part of the government's efforts to reduce overcrowding in prisons and detention centres," he added.

Director General of Corrections Mashudi stated that the granting of remissions on major religious occasions represents the fulfilment of inmates' rights as well as part of a continuous rehabilitation strategy.

"Remissions and sentence reductions are not merely reductions in punishment, but rather rehabilitation instruments that encourage inmates to continue improving themselves and preparing for their return to society," Mashudi said.

Through the granting of Special Remissions and Special Sentence Reductions for Lunar New Year 2026, the Directorate General of Corrections has also saved Rp25,447,500 in inmate meal costs.
