400 workers laid off

PURWAKARTA, West Java: About 400 employees of a garment
factory, PT Mayer Florek Indonesia, have been laid off
indefinitely without clear reasons.

Chief of the local office of manpower ministry Gumbira said
his office is looking into the report.

"If the company has financial problems, it should have given
proper severance pay to its workers before it closed down,"
Gumbira told Antara.

Last week, the company's workers went on the rampage, charging
that the management kept changing the date of their pay day.
Personnel manager Bayu Sangaji was seriously injured in the
incident.

The workers said they have been to various government agencies
for help but found no immediate solution. (pan)
