President Prabowo Subianto has emphasised the need to conserve fuel oil amid the Middle East conflict. Following this directive, the government will implement a work-from-home (WFH) policy for one day per week.

Prabowo’s instructions were previously conveyed during a cabinet meeting at the State Palace in Jakarta on Friday (13/3/2026). Prabowo assured that Indonesia’s energy supply remains secure for now, but proactive measures are still necessary.

“We cannot assume that whatever happens, we are safe. We are grateful to be safe, but we have not made any efforts to reduce our fuel oil consumption. Many countries have already taken steps. Many countries have already implemented measures,” said Prabowo.

Prabowo then explained the steps taken by Pakistan, which reduced the working week to four days and cut ministers’ salaries for efficiency.

“So they consider this critical, hence ‘critical measures’. It’s as if for them this is like our COVID situation back then. They implemented work from home for all offices, both government and private, with 50% working from home. Then they reduced the working days to just four,” he explained.

“They even reduced salaries for cabinet members, DPR members, and all these savings in salaries are collected to help the most vulnerable or weak groups,” he continued.

Based on this, the government plans to implement WFH. The WFH policy was announced by Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto after a meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Thursday (19/3/2026). Here are the details regarding the WFH plan.

  1. One Day per Week

Airlangga revealed that WFH will be implemented to curb fuel oil usage. Therefore, the government is opening up flexibility in working hours by applying WFH for one day in a five-day workweek.

“And finally, regarding the study, with the high oil prices, efficiency in working time is needed. Flexibility for work from home will be opened, one day in five working days,” said Airlangga.

  1. To Be Implemented After Eid

The WFH policy will take effect after Eid. However, Airlangga has not specified the exact timing.

“After Eid, but we will determine the time later,” said Airlangga.

His side is currently preparing the technical implementation. The government will provide further information later.

“Now we are preparing all this again, once the concept is mature, we will immediately inform the public in more detail,” he continued.

  1. Applies to Civil Servants to Private Sector

Airlangga emphasised that the technical aspects of the WFH plan are being prepared. Not only for civil servants (ASN), he hopes WFH will also be applied to private sector workers.

“Now the technicals are being prepared, because it is hoped that this will not only apply to ASN but also to the private sector and regional governments,” he said.

  1. One Day of WFH per Week Saves 1/5 of Daily Fuel Usage

With this policy, Airlangga revealed significant savings in fuel oil usage. He stated that the government will save one-fifth of the fuel oil expended daily.

“Because there are savings in terms of what, mobility usage of petrol, the savings are quite significant, one-fifth, one-fifth of what we usually expend,” he said.

Regarding the duration of the policy, Airlangga also did not elaborate. According to him, the WFH policy will adjust to the developing situation in the Middle East.

“We will see the situation later. The oil price situation, the war situation. So we follow the developing situation,” he said.
