4 Key Facts Regarding Sudden Escalator Reversal at Duri Station Leaving Commuters Injured
An escalator malfunction at Duri Station, West Jakarta, has resulted in injuries to several passengers. The escalator, which was intended to operate in the upward direction, suddenly reversed, causing commuters to fall.
The facility disruption occurred at one of the escalators in Duri Station on Saturday (3/10/2026) at approximately 07:45 WIB. As of now, the escalator has not returned to normal operation.
Here are four facts regarding the incident:
- The Escalator Suddenly Reversed Direction
An escalator at Duri Station, West Jakarta, experienced a malfunction that caused it to move backwards while passengers were using it. Several people on the escalator reportedly fell and collided with one another.
A local resident, Mayska, stated that the incident occurred in the morning around 07:00 WIB. At that time, the escalator was initially operating normally.
“It was initially normal. The incident happened in the morning around 07:00 WIB,” said Mayska when met at Duri Station on Saturday (3/10/2026).
Mayska admitted she was not on the escalator during the incident but witnessed the condition of the passengers after they fell. According to her, the escalator, which should have been moving upwards, suddenly moved backwards, causing passengers to lose their balance.
“The escalator suddenly went backwards. It was supposed to go up, but during the incident, it went backwards. People were unprepared, so they all fell and bumped into each other. They lost their balance,” she said.
The situation caused momentary panic, with bystanders reportedly shouting for help. Security guards and staff immediately transported the injured to a medical post.
Another resident, Eka, admitted to using the escalator after it had stopped moving. He passed through the escalator around 08:00 WIB. Eka noted that while the escalator was stationary, staff had not yet installed barriers, allowing passengers to pass through.
“I went down via the escalator, but it had already stopped. Around 8:00, there was nothing there, but the escalator hadn’t been closed off yet. So, I just passed through,” said Eka. He admitted to feeling anxious after learning about the reversal, but assumed it was safe because the machine was no longer running.
