4,833 inmates in Aceh receive remission, 25 released immediately

A total of 4,833 prisoners and juvenile detainees in correctional facilities and state detention centres across Aceh have received sentence reductions in conjunction with the 81st anniversary of Indonesian independence, with 25 of them released immediately.

Ramdani Boy, Head of the Aceh Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections, said in Banda Aceh on Monday that the remissions were granted to inmates who met the requirements, including good behaviour and participation in correctional rehabilitation programmes.

“This year, 4,833 inmates in Aceh received remissions. The remissions were granted to eligible inmates, including those with good behaviour who have participated in correctional rehabilitation programmes,” he said.

The symbolic handover of the remission decree was carried out by Aceh Deputy Governor Fadhlullah, accompanied by Ramdani Boy, to two inmates at Anjong Mon Mata, within the Meuligoe Governor’s Complex in Banda Aceh, on Monday.

Ramdani said the sentence reductions received by inmates varied between one and six months.

However, 4,833 people received remissions, while the remainder did not because they had already been granted leave or conditional release.

Of the total recipients, 1,379 people received a three-month sentence reduction, 1,006 received a two-month remission, and 796 received a four-month remission.

Twenty-seven of the remission recipients were juvenile detainees, while 25 inmates were released immediately after receiving their sentence reductions.

Ramdani said the largest number of remission recipients were inmates convicted of narcotics offences.

“The largest number of remission recipients are those convicted of drug offences. The majority of prison and detention centre inmates are drug offenders, accounting for 65 per cent of the total 7,300 inmates across Aceh,” he said.
